Rhythm Roots and Revolution

Tabanka

Saturday 13 November 19:30, Ole Olsensalen, Arktisk kultursenter

"Rhythm, Roots & Revolution" is an energetic and hard-hitting dance performance that addresses the struggle for self-preservation, survival, self-definition and identity. Tabanka illuminates our time through a clear Afro-Norwegian identity.

In 2018, Reggae was incorporated as a protected intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Reggae is notorious for its activism and struggle for human rights, anti-racism and as a mobilizing force in the fight against apartheid. Tabanka Dance Ensemble consists of melanin-rich dance artists who celebrate dance and rhythm while taking up the fight against injustice and hatred. Rhythm Roots & Revolution takes us into a rhythmically expressive and evocative world that asks us to move together towards a future that takes a stand. The performance is based on Caribbean dance and body language and is based on an authentic expression where all the references come from the original culture. About Tabanka

Tabanka is known for her soulful choreographies, her undulating backbones, pulsating rhythms and urge to tell her story. The company is not afraid to use dance to address the big issues. "Rhythm, Roots & Revolution" deals with racism, discrimination, identity, belonging, heritage and hope. As instruments, they bring pulsating reggae rhythms, strong expressions and an incredibly infectious joy of dancing up on stage. The seriousness, the joy, the rhythm, the dance are as contrasting as life, and create an exciting starting point for reflection and discussion after seeing the performance.

All of Tabanka's athletes are also trained youth workers and that is blah. conversations with black young people's experiences in Norway that form the basis for RRR's theme and language of movement. The performance is not only an insight into a new and exciting dance genre, but also an insight into a reality experience that is rarely missed.

Tabanka Dance Ensemble is Norway's first "Soul Dance" Company. They are based on both the language of movement and the black experience here in the Nordic countries, in a similar way as African-Americans' "Soul" music and dance are based on the black American experience.

The company is known for its Talawa Technique which is a mere 3 codified techniques for the Africanist movement. The technique is taught internationally at University level. Tabanka has gradually gained international attention and this performance has blah. has been shown at the Bernie Grants Arts Center, and the South Bank Center in the UK and has scheduled screenings in the US and Canada in 2016.
